An Introduction to the Mental Health Balance Scale

The mental health balance scale is a way of measuring the factors that affect your mental health and wellbeing.

These factors include 5 factors of wellness and four factors of risk, each of which have contributing aspects or building blocks.

OrigamAi platform is set up to help you easily identify and manage the main and contributing factors to your mental health and wellness.

The Main components of the Mental Health Balance Scale are:

  • Emotional Intelligence
  • Risk of Depression
  • Resiliencey
  • Risk of Burnout
  • Physical Health
  • Substance use risk Factors
  • Mindfulness
  • Stress Risk Factors
  • Personal Subjective Wellbeing

Let’s walk through it together

On the main page of your dashboard you’ll see this scale. Take a close look at the Emotional Intelligence category.

If you scroll down the page and click through to your personal dashboard, you’ll see the same scale followed by a section called Model Hierarchies, where you can read more about each factor of wellness or risk.

In our example here, Emotional Intelligence is rated as “Slightly Above Average”, and you can see a brief definition of Emotional Intelligence: The ability to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.

Model Hierarchies give you a general rating and a definition of each factor of wellness or risk

Clicking on any of these sections will allow you to drill down and discover the building blocks of each factor. These building blocks establish your levels of wellness or risk that contribute to your score in the parent area.

As you can see in this summary, the score of each foundational building block contributes to the score of the next. In our Emotional Intelligence example, you can see that a score of “average” in stress management (level 4) affects all the levels above.

A quick scroll down will go into deeper detail about what each of these building blocks means. In our Emotional Intelligence example, you can see how a slightly lower score in social awareness impacts relationship management and stress management.

Did you notice how Social Awareness impacts Stress Management, but Relationship Management does not? This example’s responses indicated the reason for stress was related to social awareness, but not relationship management, meaning that their stress management was affected by personal and situational awareness, but not the relationships in their life.

So what now?

Mental health and wellness are complex issues, and it can be powerful to see how one aspect does or does not affect another!

In an organizational context, leadership could see trending data about the factors of the mental health balance scale and take action to investigate further and correct systemic issues causing poor outcomes.

On a personal level, what you do with this information is up to you. OrigamAi is a tool to help you reflect on how you feel and what you need. You may want to try some reflective journaling around the results of your survey, talk to your friends or loved ones, or even consider what steps you can take to enhance your wellbeing.

We have placed a variety of resources on each page to help support your mental health journey, but if you are in crisis, please call 911 or reach out to a medical professional.
